Cumberland VA – Cumberland County Fire and EMS has received a Rescue Squad Assistance Grant totaling $252,000.  The financial assistance for Emergency Medical Services Grants Program, known as the Rescue Squads Assistance Fund (RSAF) is a grant program for nonprofit licensed EMS agency or other Virginia emergency medical service organization operating on a nonprofit basis exclusively for the benefit of the general public pursuant to § 32.1-111.12 of the Code of Virginia.

Items eligible for funding include EMS equipment and vehicles, computers, EMS management programs, courses/classes and projects benefiting the recruitment and retention of EMS members.

Cumberland County’s grant application and award included funding for a new Type 1 ambulance that would replace an existing ambulance in the County’s fleet.  The grant award does require a 30% match from Cumberland County.

The grant for the ambulance comes on the heels of several other grant awards including a previously awarded RSAF grant, Emergency Medical Dispatch grant, a VDEM Performance Grant, VDEM Radiological Grant, and Assistance to Localities Funding for volunteer fire departments.

For fiscal year 2025, Cumberland has been awarded grant funding and/or received donations totaling $525,935.34 specific to Fire and EMS services, operations, and equipment.

“We are very excited about the award of the RSAF grant to Cumberland County Fire and EMS. This is another positive step forward as we seek to constantly improve our emergency services program, stated Darren Hurley, Coordinator of Emergency Services.
